Kumihimo is the ancient art of Japanese braidmaking. One of the most common braiding techniques uses a marudai (round stand). Throughout history Kumihimo has been admired both for its usefulness and its beauty.
Braids are mainly associated with the Samurai warriors, who used them in the construction of their armour to lace sections together.
The marudai has a weight bag which pulls down the completed braid, and eight bobbins which hold the silk warps. The weight bag weighs half the combined weight of all the bobbins. |
