The Theatre

The TheatreSince the 18th century AD (CE), Burmese court theatre became extremely elaborate. Popular themes for dramas included episodes from the Ramayana and the Jataka Tales. Today the same dramas are still retold at fairs and festivals by storytellers and puppeteers.

The Music

The MusicSince as early as the 9th century AD (CE) theatrical performances have been accompanied by music. Even today puppet shows, dances and dramas are accompanied by the traditional Burmese orchestra.

The Burmese theatre orchestra featured on this site was once owned and played by the late Mr K Thaung to whose memory this learning resource is dedicated.
