about the project (title)

After applying successfully for funding from the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) earlier this year Exeter City Museum will now be able to extend its access programme focusing specifically on the art collection and, to a lesser extent, the National Gallery touring exhibition 'Travelling Companions'. Beginning in mid-September the project will run until June 2000.

Working with a wide variety of groups the aim of the project is to increase access to an area of the Museum which has been subject to recent changes in line with the broader Museum Access Policy. This includes extensive refurbishment of the art gallery and the initiation of a programme of quarterly re-displays of the collection.

Phil Mawdsley is co-ordinating the project, based at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. He is linking the various participants and facilitating, with the assistance of other Museum staff, appropriate and relevant contact with the art collection for the four main 'project partners'. This includes workshops in the gallery and off site, loans and behind-the-scenes visits to the art store and conservation department. The partners are -

  • Walter Daw First School - a local primary school
  • The Park School - a local secondary school
  • The Grenville Unit - working with excluded teenagers in Exeter
  • The Atkinson Unit - a local secure unit for young offenders

A major part of the project is the involvement of the Telematics Centre within the University of Exeter, School of Education who will provide a substantial ICT element in the form of this web site. It is anticipated that this will provide a point of contact for all the participants and will include discussion, collaborations, documentation and a virtual gallery space.

The project will be monitored by the DfEE and its development discussed at, for example, The Devon Museums Forum in December.
