Bramble Ward - the education facility of Wonford Hospital
alan richards: podwer mills farm, dartmoor, 1972

The children and staff from Bramble Ward - the education facility of Wonford Hospital, Exeter - took part in Realise. During a two hour session on the ward the group looked at objects and images from the Museum as part of their project on Dartmoor. There were waterclours, prints and photographs from the Fine Art collection and a bronze age axe-head and neolithic flint arrow-heads from the Museum's huge Archaeological collections. Following a discussion everybody was able to draw and to engage in some 'serious looking'. These kind of sessions, taking place 'off-site' and using a small number of objects in a relaxed and intimate setting, are a vital part of Realise as they allow groups and individuals not able to visit the Museum to take an active part in the project.

Larkby Unit at Wonford Hospital workshop

The project co-ordinator led a session at Larkby, a unit attached to Exeter Hospitals and working with teenagers with eating disorders.

It was felt to be more appropriate to hold the session 'off-site' as this allowed for a more relaxed and informal atmosphere. The young people here follow a programme of curriculum-based education. Realise can act, in this case, as an exciting addition to the work carried out by Larkby's regular staff but can also satisfy some of the requirements of the curriculum. For instance, in looking at art and craft objects made within different cultures and periods. In discussion with teacher Cathy Piper before the session, Phil Mawdsley was able to identify Museum objects which related to the particular interests and concerns of each of the young people taking part. These included bats from the Natural History collection, Ancient Roman artifacts and objects from the World War II handling collection as well as the Caribbean-related objects from the day's earlier session.

Realise was able to assist children and teachers from Ladysmith Middle School on their field trip to Exmouth. Informed by a previous visit to the Museum (see 23rd/24th May) to look at paintings, prints and drawings of Exmouth the children were set a number of drawing tasks which relied on keen observation and working in an unusual (i.e. not a classroom!) environment. This included 'landscape' drawing with an emphasis on creating a sense of distance and studying and drawing reflections of yachts in a dock.
