Other collections, exhibitions and areas of the museum used by the project

As Realise has progressed, one of the developments has been the access given to many of the participants to temporary exhibitions and to other collections in the Museum apart from Fine Art. While largely unplanned this has been an exciting and challenging addition to the Art Access Project. Mostly brought about by quirks of programming which left few of the Museum's own artworks on public display, this has led to opportunities to, amongst other things, bring individual paintings and drawings out of storage to illustrate talks on, for example, the role of women in Victorian society.

As well as using the Fine Art collection in this flexible way, which can target the specific requirements of a particular group, participants in Realise have also been able to access a wide variety of other objects, ideas and experiences. This has mainly involved working with the National Gallery touring exhibition 'Travelling Companions' - during which an outreach officer from the National and the Realise co-ordinator led a programme of workshops for a wide variety of groups - and the World Cultures and Natural History collections. There has also been input from the conservation department with informal talks given by Alison Hopper-Bishop, the Keeper of Conservation at the Museum.
