Jews of Devon and Cornwall
A celebration of the history of Jewish people in the South West.

Painting of interior of the Exeter Synagogue and grounds13 May - 17 June 2000
Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter

This exhibition, organised by The Hidden Legacy Foundation, provides an opportunity to rediscover some of the forgotten history of the Jews of the South-West. Alongside aspects of Jewish life and worship, it shows something of the rich contribution which the Jewish people have made to the cultural, business and social life of the region.

Exeter and Plymouth are particularly important because they have the two oldest Ashkenazi synagogues still in use in the English-speaking world, dating from 1760's. They possess unique pieces of eighteenth-century ritual silver, and textiles which, unusually, have inscriptions giving prominence to women.
