Both really. The wolves (represented by the stars around the winter moon) and the whale are still around today. But we believe that the thunderbird and the sea serpent, although they do not exist today, did once exist. Many chiefs are represented by these animals, and they are often referred to in their songs, dances and on poles, like this pole.
