political constitution & social divide economic & social development - a child's view the Obas

The Obas

"Obas before, they have what I call traditional power to settle matters, to settle disputes, to create harmony in society."

"And they were in charge of the land of the people."

"And they had, what I call, 'Council of Chiefs'."

The Obas were Patrons of the Arts and heads of secret societies, cultural societies, although they don't understand the culture. Therefore the art is easily looted.

When the British came they took that power and imposed democracy, neutralising the rule of the kings. Nowadays the Obas are kings in name only and have only a cultural role to play.

Nowadays the real power lies with the political middle class.
